Ever wondered why armies have a public relations department? Not only in democracies, military action needs public support as part of the Clausewitzian trinity, the “wunderliche Dreifaltigkeit” of war. In addition, the depiction of military might is itself a vector of power. But pictures bearing witness to the reality of war have of course to walk a fine line.
ECPAD, the French public agency supplying photos and film of the armed forces is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year. 20 of its many emblematic photos are currently shown in the courtyard of the Musée de l’Armée, Hôtel des Invalides in Paris. A blog is presenting them twice a week.
