What shall it be, penguins, or mass demonstrations? Two (very different) sides of the same Turkish coin… On the night of 2 June 2013, with popular unrest spreading after the police having brutally cracked down on the Gezi park protest movement in Istanbul, Turkey, CNN Turkey “chose” to air a special report on penguins, while CNN International covered the protests instead. An enraged Turkish citizen published the two TV images side by side. Turkish media are some of the least free in Europe, ranking even behind Russia’s.
The penguin, equipped with gas mask, became the emblem of the Gezi park movement (although unfortunately, gas masks were in woefully short supply).
