#see power tuesdays: “Mapping your state of mind”

Is there a way to graphically depict what is on
people’s mind right this moment? And to directly exert influence? It
sounds pretty far-fetched, but certain rough approximations are already
possible. Have a look at http://trendsmap.com/ for example, a firm that provides visualisation of real-time twitter feeds around the world.

Via
key words appearing on interactive maps, Trendsmap clients can get a glimpse of
the topics people tweet about in specific countries or regions at
specific moments in time.

Collecting and visualising such
data can do more than just help detect and analyze trends. It opens up
the possibility for influence and possibly manipulation. If you are a political actor, you
might try to strategically place information in the midst of a crisis. If you
represent a brand, social media monitoring gives the opportunity to
intervene through real-time marketing.

Here, a map is not only depicting power strictly speaking, it is in itself is a powerful tool.
